Artist Statement

The Creative Process that I‘m involved in reflects my interest in creating works that arise from the unconscious. I draw a lot and make sketches on anything that’s around; scraps of paper, discarded envelopes, and occasionally, even in a sketchpad. I feel drawing without conscious intent allows new ideas to flow and develop. During the pandemic I collected these sketches and used them as a source for my paintings and sculptures.

Along with those drawings, my recent work is inspired by music. I like all types of music, but for my artwork it’s mostly been jazz and some classical. I try to capture the time element in music, the rhythm and phrasing…  this takes the form of symbols and shapes floating in space. I find that the fluctuations in color create a visual resonance akin to the aural relations between the notes in music. I’m also intrigued by the expressiveness of musical notation … terms like allegro (sprightly), or delicato (delicate) spark ideas for compositions.

My love of nature is echoed in my work. The sun, moon and stars may appear… then there’s the naturalness of the line…  a tree branch gives an idea for a certain curve. Or the Zen notion where a line is drawn spontaneously with no thought, emerging from a creative spark within us.

In the end, it all seems like magic to me. In the studio I descend into a deeper part of myself. At some point, the painting or sculpture begins to tells me what to do. Once that dialogue begins, we’re on our way.
