Wood Sculpture

About the Wood Sculpture

The Ukiyo-e Variations are a series of carved wood sculptures inspired by the Japanese woodblock prints known as the “Ukiyo-e,” (which translates as, Pictures of a Floating World.) I was taken with the linear movement and aliveness of the figures in these prints. The Japanese artists also referenced nature with a wonderful play of line … That play of line led me to sculpt the natural, flowing forms that these wood sculptures take.

I like to display the Ukiyo-e sculptures on a tabletop, or on the wall with a semicircular shelf as a base. When two or three of these pieces are displayed together on a longer shelf, an interesting visual conversation takes place between the sculptures, which are painted in oil paint.
